Understanding what cable size should be used for zappi

Warning: The information provided below is for guidance only. Myenergi products should only be installed by trained professionals who are already familiar with the details outlined below.

Overview

The maximum current that the Zappi charger can supply to an electric vehicle (EV) is 32A. It is essential to consider this as a high current load on a low voltage supply. Selecting the appropriate cable is critical to prevent overheating, minimise power loss, and ensure the Zappi operates correctly.

  • Minimum Cable Size: 6.0 mm² for a 32A feed.
  • The actual cable selected will depend on the installation method and the length of the cable. Over longer distances, voltage drop and power losses become significant.

Wire Strip Length

The main terminals are designed for wires with a maximum diameter of 16 mm².

  1. Insert the mains cable through the installed cable gland (if not already done).
  2. Strip back the outer sheath, ensuring all cables reach the terminal blocks while leaving a little excess.
  3. Strip back all coloured wires by approximately 18 mm.Wire Strip Length zappi
  4. If using hard-wired CT clamps, insert these at this stage. It is advisable to use a specialist cable gland that accommodates multiple cables while maintaining IP integrity, or two separate cable glands to ensure the Zappi remains sealed.

To insert the wires into the terminal blocks, use a suitably sized screwdriver to open the spring terminal. Gently push the wire into the terminal, ensuring it is fully seated. Remove the screwdriver and check that the wire is securely held in the terminal. For further assistance, refer to the article on the Installation of conductor cable (zappi 2.1)

Cable and Gland Requirements

  • Cable Cross-Sectional Area: Between 4 mm² and 10 mm².
  • Gland Size: Minimum of 16 mm and maximum of 25 mm. Generally, a stuffing gland can be used. SWA CW outdoor glands are suitable for armoured cable.

The choice of cable and gland size is the responsibility of the installer and should be determined on an install-by-install basis, taking into account specific installation requirements.

Note: Failure to use an appropriate gland will void the warranty if a failure occurs.
