What is Vehicle to Grid?
V2G is a technology that enables electricity to be pushed back to the power grid from the battery of an electric car. With electric vehicle-to-grid technology, a car battery can be charged and discharged based on different signals such as energy production or consumption nearby.
V2G & Zappi
At the moment Zappi does not support "Vehicle to Grid" (V2G).
Very few EVs support vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and it requires an expensive DC charger rather than the more standard AC charger like Zappi. This is because V2G requires:
- more sophisticated communications between the EV and the chargers. This is not currently supported by the AC charging standard.
- more power electronics to convert the energy in the EV battery back into the electricity supply.
Eventually, we expect to see more vehicles providing the power electronics in the vehicle as part of the onboard charger. At this point, the additional costs of making a V2G charger will be considerably reduced and we do expect that a future version of Zappi will support V2G.
Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we will be able to provide a simple upgrade to the current version of Zappi as additional electronics will still be required to communicate with the EV
