Do I need to fit a grid CT Clamp?

Watch this short video which explains how the grid CT clamp works and why it’s required across the myenergi ecosystem.

While this video is GLO specific, the same rules apply to all myenergi devices.

What is a Grid CT Clamp?

A Current Transformer (CT) clamp is a small sensor that measures the electrical current flowing through your main supply cable. It tells your myenergi devices how much energy you are importing from or exporting to the grid.

  • Fitted around the live or neutral conductor at your main supply
  • Measures import and export power in real time
  • Allows myenergi devices to adjust their behaviour automatically

Why fitting a Grid CT Clamp is essential

Tap the dropdowns below to view each section.

Safety

The grid CT ensures your devices work safely by providing accurate data on your household load. Without it, your system cannot manage grid import and export correctly, which can lead to overloading or device faults.

System performance

Smart features like ECO charging, solar diversion, and load balancing rely on grid CT data. Without it, devices such as zappi or eddi may show “Check Grid CT” errors and stop operating efficiently.

Compliance and correct operation

Each phase of your supply requires one correctly positioned grid CT clamp. Fitting multiple or misplaced clamps leads to inaccurate readings and potential system errors.

Important

Fitting the grid CT is not optional. It is a safety requirement for correct system operation. Only qualified installers should carry out this work. If in doubt, contact your installer before proceeding.

Installation guidance

  • Fit the clamp on the live or neutral tail at the main meter point
  • Ensure the arrow points towards the consumer unit (if fitted on live)
  • Use only one grid CT per phase
  • Secure the clamp fully and ensure a clean, solid connection
  • For three-phase systems, fit one clamp per phase

If fitted incorrectly, your myenergi device will not be able to measure power flow correctly and may not control load as expected.

Key takeaways

  • Always fit a grid CT clamp. It is mandatory for all myenergi systems
  • It provides the data needed for safe, smart energy management
  • Incorrect installation causes faults and reduces performance
