Summary
If your zappi 2.1 screen shows MNGD where the charging mode normally appears, your charger is in Managed Mode. A smart charging service you have signed up to, such as Gridpay Auto Schedule or OVO Charge Anytime, is controlling when your car charges.
Managed Mode works like Eco+ - it still uses surplus solar when there is enough - but the mode arrows and scheduling menus on the zappi are locked so nothing interferes with the service's charging plan. You can still boost if you need charge straight away. Managed Mode switches off when you leave the service.
What does MNGD on my zappi screen mean?
MNGD is short for Managed Mode. It replaces the usual FAST / ECO / ECO+ / STOP label on the zappi 2.1 home screen. It is not a fault. It tells you that a connected service is managing your charging schedule.
If you have a zappi GLO, there is no screen, so you will not see MNGD.
Why is my zappi in Managed Mode?
Your zappi is put into Managed Mode by a smart charging service you have connected it to. Today that is Gridpay Auto Schedule or OVO Charge Anytime. Each service has its own support page explaining how it schedules your charging: [links]
If you do not recognise either of these, see "My zappi shows MNGD but I haven't signed up to anything" below.
What does Managed Mode actually do?
The service sends your zappi a charging schedule. The zappi stores the schedule locally and follows it, so charging continues even if the internet drops out for a while.
Between scheduled charges the zappi behaves like Eco+ and will charge from surplus solar or other generation when at least 1.4 kW is available. This is why you may see it charging during the day.
During a scheduled charge it charges from the grid at the rate the schedule sets, usually full power. Some services vary the rate or add short breaks.
It will never take energy out of your car battery.
What can I still do on the zappi?
Boost. Press the boost button on the zappi 2.1 as normal. On a zappi GLO, boost from the app instead.
Unlock the plug on untethered units.
PIN lock still works, but the zappi must be unlocked for a scheduled charge to start.
Menus. You can still open the menus to view settings and information, but the items listed below cannot be changed.
What is locked in Managed Mode?
On the zappi 2.1 the following are locked or fixed while Managed Mode is on:
Charging mode - the up and down arrows are disabled, so you cannot switch to Fast, Eco, Eco+ or Stop
Boost timers and Smart Boost - cannot be edited
Manual boost amount - fixed
Minimum Green Level - fixed at 100%
Preconditioning - off
eSense input - disabled
Start-up mode - fixed to Eco+
The myenergi app also hides the mode and Minimum Green Level controls for a device in Managed Mode. Any zappi timers or car charging schedules you had before are not used and should be removed so they do not conflict with the service's schedule.
I need to charge now. How do I boost?
Press the boost button on a zappi 2.1, or use the boost option in the app for the service you are on. A boost charges at full power regardless of tariff or solar, so it may cost more than a scheduled charge. Use it only when you need it.
Can I stop a charge that is in progress?
Yes, from the app you use to manage the service (the myenergi app for Gridpay, the supplier's app for other services). You can stop a boost you started, and you can stop a scheduled charge. Depending on the service, stopping a scheduled charge may clear the rest of that schedule until the service sends a new one. In the myenergi app you cannot stop a solar (Eco+) charge while in Managed Mode - unplug the car if you need it to stop. See your service's support page for the exact steps.
Why is it charging during the day when I only wanted cheap overnight charging?
Managed Mode behaves like Eco+ between scheduled charges, so it uses surplus solar when available. If you would rather not charge from solar at all, contact the service's support team about your options.
Why did my zappi go into Managed Mode without me changing anything?
Managed Mode is switched on by the service, not by you on the zappi. If you recently joined a smart charging service this is expected, and you will have been told during sign-up. It can take up to an hour after signing up for the zappi to switch.
If another person with access to your myenergi account joined a service, they will have accepted this on your behalf.
My zappi shows MNGD but I haven't signed up to anything
First check for an active service:
Open your zappi in the myenergi app. If a smart charging service is managing it, the zappi's screen in the app looks different: the usual mode controls are replaced by the service's status and schedule information.
Check any energy supplier app you use for a connected charger.
Check whether anyone else who uses your myenergi account has joined a service.
If none apply, or the zappi has been offline from the myenergi cloud for a long time, contact support with your serial number. Support can see whether a service is sending commands to your zappi and can help clear the mode.
How do I turn Managed Mode off?
Leave the service that is managing your zappi. For Gridpay this is done in the myenergi app; for other services, in that service's own app. Your zappi then leaves Managed Mode and normal mode control returns.
After leaving, check the charging mode on the zappi and set it to the mode you want. Any boost timers you used before will need to be re-entered.
Which zappi models support Managed Mode?
zappi 2.1 on firmware 5.736 or later.
zappi GLO, which updates its firmware automatically.
Older zappi models (v1 and v2.0) do not support Managed Mode and will never show MNGD. Whether a service can still work with them depends on the service.
If your zappi 2.1 is on older firmware it will need updating first. Some services do this automatically when you join; others ask you to update before connecting.
Does Managed Mode cost me anything or change my tariff?
No. Managed Mode is only the control method. You pay your energy supplier for the electricity used as normal. Any rewards or rates come from the service you are on, not from the mode.
