If your EV is charging at a rate lower than expected, there are several key checks to help pinpoint and resolve the issue. Follow the steps below for a thorough diagnosis.
Step 1: Verify PWM on Your zappi
The first step in diagnosing the issue is to check the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) setting on your zappi. PWM controls the communication between the charger and the EV to determine the charging rate.
To check the PWM setting, follow the instructions in our dedicated guide: How to Check PWM on zappi.
Step 2: Evaluate the PWM Reading
After checking the PWM, observe the reading displayed. A correct reading for a zappi operating normally should be 53% ± 2%.
- If the reading is within this range: zappi is functioning correctly and offering the EV a full charge capacity of up to 7.2kW. The EV's lower acceptance rate may indicate an issue with the vehicle rather than zappi.
- If the reading is outside this range: This may suggest a potential issue with the charger.
Step 3: Test Another Charger or EV
To isolate the source of the problem, perform the following tests:
-
Try charging your EV on another charger. Use a similar charger to zappi, such as a 32-amp AC charger.
- If the charging rate is still reduced on the alternative charger: The issue is likely with the EV.
- If the charging rate improves on the other charger: The issue may lie with zappi.
-
Test zappi with a different EV. If possible, connect another EV to your zappi to observe the charging rate.
- If the other EV charges at the full 7.2kW rate: This indicates that zappi is functioning correctly.
- If the second EV also charges at a reduced rate: This suggests a potential issue with zappi or its installation.
Step 4: Inspect EV Settings
Modern EVs often have settings that can limit charging rates under certain conditions. Check your EV’s settings for the following:
- Reduced charging rate settings (commonly found in vehicles like Tesla). These may be activated for home charging or specific timed schedules.
- Battery preservation modes that reduce the maximum allowable charging rate to extend battery lifespan.
- Firmware updates for your EV that may impact charging behaviour.
Adjust or disable any such settings that may be limiting the charging rate.
Step 5: Contact Support for Further Assistance
If the above steps do not resolve the issue or if the PWM reading is outside the expected range, contact our support team for further assistance.
Submit a request here: Submit a Support Request.
Our team will arrange a live troubleshooting session, during which a a team member will work with you while your EV is present to identify and resolve the issue.
Additional Notes
- Always ensure that your zappi is installed and configured correctly as per the installation manual.
- Regularly check for updates to zappi firmware, which may improve performance and resolve known issues.
