If your zappi 2.1 is displaying an NMI message and you’re able to connect it to your router using an Ethernet cable via the RJ45 port, follow the steps below to recover the unit.
These instructions will help you manually trigger a firmware update over Ethernet to clear the fault.
What is NMI?
NMI refers to a fault state where a zappi 2.1 displays a screen filled with lines of code. Each line begins with NMI, followed by a mix of random characters and images.
Please see below for an example of what this looks like, What codes you see may be different but visually similar:
Important
All persons involved in commissioning, maintaining, and servicing the device must:
- Be suitably qualified
- Have knowledge of and experience in dealing with electrical installations
Tap the dropdown below to view the relevant section.
- Turn off power to the zappi using the isolator (if fitted) or at the consumer unit.
- Remove the front cover of the zappi.
- Connect an ethernet cable between the zappi and a spare LAN (RJ45) port on the customer’s router.
RJ45 Port Care
In early zappi 2.1 units, the RJ45 port design differs slightly. Please handle with care when connecting an ethernet cable to ensure a secure fit without putting stress on the PCB.
Power Cycle Warning
The zappi will need to be powered back on at the consumer unit, not locally at the device. This may require two people: one to operate the circuit and another to hold the ‘+’ button on the unit.
- Press and hold the ‘+’ button on the zappi.
- While still holding the button, restore power to the unit.
- Release '+' when prompted.
- The Bootloader Menu will appear on the display.
If you see ‘Update Firmware’ instead of ‘Download Latest FW’, you can select this and skip the next three steps.
- Select ‘Set Firmware IP’ from the menu and press the ‘+’ button.
- Use the up/down arrows to set each digit, and the ‘+’ button to move to the next field.
- Enter the IP address: 015.197.078.131
- Once all digits are correct, press the ‘+’ button again to save.
Important
If the firmware IP is not saved correctly, the update will fail.
- Press the Menu button to return to the Bootloader menu.
- Select ‘Download Latest Firmware’ and press ‘+’ to confirm.
- The firmware will now download and install. The unit will restart to the main screen once complete.
- Go to the Information section in the main menu and confirm the firmware version is correct.
- Go to the Installer menu and select ‘System’.
- Choose ‘Bootloader’ to access the Bootloader menu again.
- Select ‘Set Firmware IP’ and reset the IP to 000.000.000.000.
- Press ‘+’ to save the setting.
- Finally, select ‘Run’ from the Bootloader menu to restart the unit.
The ethernet cable can now be removed if preferred.
Wi-Fi Reconnection
If your unit was originally connected via Wi-Fi, you will need to re-enable it. Go to Internet > Wi-Fi in the zappi menu and turn Wi-Fi back on after removing the ethernet cable.
